Facts and History about Riga Airport
Riga is the capital city of Latvia and Riga International Airport is the largest airport in the Baltic States. The airport has the IATA code RIX and the ICAO code EVRA and it serves as a hub for airBaltic, SmartLynx Airlines and RAF-Avia and is also one the base airports for WizzAir. RyanAir is the second largest carrier that serves the airport, following airBaltic which is the largest.
Riga international Airport (RIX), is located approximately 10 km from the center of Riga. The airport is a state-owned joint-stock company with all shares owned by the Latvian government.
Riga Airport was built in 1973 as an alternative to the outdated Spilve Airport and a renovation and modernization of the airport was completed in 2001, coinciding with Riga’s 800th anniversary. The terminal has been extended twice, in 2006 and 2016.
The airport saw 7,798,382 passengers travel through it in 2019, an increase with 10.5% from 2018. The number of aircraft movements was 87,007 in 2019 which was an increase with 4.2% compared to the year before.

Riga Airport has one single runway in directions 18/36. It is 3,200 m/10,500ft long and of concrete/asphalt. The runway is equipped with ILS CAT II.
The airport has one single terminal divided into three floors with arrivals on the first level, departures on the second and the VIP Lounge, the Prayer room and a few other facilities on the third floor. All three levels have both landside and air side facilities.
The signs at the airport are in both Latvian and English for the convenience of the travellers.
Check-in, Security Control and Fast Track
The 36 check-in desks are located on the departures floor, the second level, as are the security controls and the Fast Track security control. Tickets for the Fast Track can be purchased by anyone with a boarding pass. Children under the age of 12 may go through the Fast Track together with someone with a Fast Track ticket.
Visitor Centre at Riga International Airport
The visitor centre is located in the public area of Arrivals E on floor 1 of the terminal. Here you can purchase travel cards for Riga (Riga pass) and the airport privilege card RIX Club, as well as a ticket for the Fast Track security control. It is also possible to send or receive a fax, make copies and scan documents if needed, make a Skype call, apply for a tour of the airport or even purchase Riga International Airport souvenirs here.
WiFi at Riga Airport
Free WiFi is available throughout the airport by connecting to the “RIX-Free – WiFi” network. After connection has been established, open up a browser and you can visit your website of choice, after a short advertisement, for as long as you need to.
Family Friendly Areas
There are several playgrounds in the terminal, located on the air side, and there are nurseries with diaper changing tables in multiple places at the airport, both in the public landside areas and on the air side next to some of the gates.
The VIP Lounge at Riga Airport is located on the third floor of the terminal building and may be used by those travelling in business class, those with the RIX club card and those who wish to pay for it. It is possible to pay at the entrance to the lounge as long as there are seats available in it. The paid entrance allows for a three hour stay in the lounge.
The lounge offers food and beverage, comfortable seating, shower including towels and shower accessories, children’s room with books and toys and private suites (at an additional cost)
Transfers to and from Riga Airport
The car rental companies at Riga Airport can be found in the public areas of Arrivals E and C on the first floor or the terminal building. It is normally recommended to book your rental car in advance for the convenience of the traveler receiving the car of their choice at the time of arrival.
Three different taxi associations have been licensed to serve the airport area and the people travelling through it. These taxis can be found at the taxi rank right outside Arrivals E on the first floor of the terminal. You are advised to ask for the price before choosing your taxi. Although there is a fixed price for these associations for the transport service there might be differences in costs for other services that might be needed for the transportation of you, your company and your luggage. These taxis do not need any pre-booking.
Prices are also displaced on the passenger side in the taxi cabin.
Other taxi companies may be used, but need to be booked in advance or you will have to wait for its arrival to be picked up and on the way to your destination.
There are no trains servicing Riga International Airport at the present time, although there are plans for a train line between Riga and the airport for the future. There are bus services between the airport and the train station in central Riga.
The short-term parking lot is located opposite the terminal building and offers free parking for the first 10 minutes once every 24 hours, after the initial first 10 minutes of parking a fee is applicable.
There are a total of 3 long-term parking lots at the airport, although at the time of writing only parking lot P3 is open, the other two, P2 and P4, are indefinitely closed. All parking lots are located in close proximity to the airport, but they also offer free transfer between the parking lot and the terminal, both directions, upon request.
